Oleg Nefedo، a judge of the Supreme Court of Russia who played a role in the legal process related to removing the Taliban from the country’s list of banned groups, has been nominated for the position of deputy chairman of Russia’s Supreme Court.
According to the newspaper “Vedomosti,” Russia’s Higher Qualification Collegium of Judges is expected to review his nomination on May 26. The move comes as part of leadership changes within the Supreme Court following recent developments in the institution’s administration.
The report states that Nefdov previously headed the panel responsible for reviewing judicial misconduct and, in recent years, became known for handling cases involving banned organizations and movements in Russia.
Among the notable cases under his review was the ruling that declared the “international LGBT movement” a banned organization in Russia, a decision that drew criticism from human rights groups and was viewed as part of Russia’s strict policies toward LGBT rights.
It is also reported that Nefdov played a role in reviewing the legal status of the Taliban following the political changes in Afghanistan.
The Vedomosti report added that it is still unclear who would replace him on the disciplinary panel if his nomination is approved, and what changes may occur in the leadership structure of the Supreme Court’s civil affairs division, one of the busiest sections of the institution.
