Fawzi Mansouri, head of military intelligence for the Libyan National Army (LNA) in eastern Libya, was killed outside his home in Benghazi.
Reuters reported that Mansouri was killed on Monday evening (19 Asad) when a bomb planted in his vehicle exploded.
Mansouri was appointed head of military intelligence of the Libyan National Army, under the command of Khalifa Haftar, in May 2024.
The General Command of the Libyan National Army described Mansouri as a “martyr” who had fought against terrorism.
Although no individual or group has so far claimed responsibility for the assassination of the senior official of eastern Libya’s military administration, Khalifa Haftar’s office has issued a warning of retaliation.
Following the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi’s government in 2011 as a result of a popular uprising backed by NATO, Libya lost its central government and became divided among various armed groups.
The internationally recognized Government of National Unity (GNU) is currently based in the capital, Tripoli. It maintains both civilian and military administrative structures and is recognized by the international community as Libya’s legitimate government.
However, eastern Libya is controlled by the Government of National Stability and its military structure, known as the Libyan National Army, led by Khalifa Haftar and headquartered in Benghazi.
