According to informed sources, Mirza Katawazai, a former Deputy Speaker of Afghanistan’s House of Representatives and a businessman, has been detained at Washington D.C. Airport in the United States.
Sources say he was detained after returning to the U.S. from Afghanistan while holding a Green Card and is currently being questioned by U.S. security authorities. It is reported that his wife was allowed to leave the airport.
The sources added that he was not detained in connection with any financial corruption case; rather, he is being investigated regarding the circumstances of his travel to Afghanistan. It has also been claimed that several other Green Card holders who had traveled to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan were detained at the same airport.
Nearly two days have passed since the incident, but U.S. security agencies have not yet issued any official statement on the matter.
Mirza Katawazai served as Deputy Speaker of Afghanistan’s House of Representatives during the former republican government and later continued his activities in the business sector.
Previously, reports had also emerged regarding the detention of some of his associates, as well as allegations involving forged land documents and the cancellation of certain contracts.
Various claims have also circulated on social media suggesting that he may be under investigation because of certain financial and political connections. However, neither Katawazai nor his family has issued an official response so far.
