Parwiz Aminzada, an Afghan journalist residing in Pakistan, has been arrested by the country’s police. The incident took place on the evening of Wednesday, May 20, in Faisal Town, Sector F-18 of Rawalpindi.
According to sources, police forces entered his residence, arrested him, and then transferred him to a police center. The arrest took place while he was at his home.
Sources say the reason for the journalist’s arrest was the expiration of his residence visa. There is also a possibility that he may be transferred to the facility known as Haji Camp for further deportation procedures.
Haji Camp is commonly used as a detention center for Afghan migrants before deportation from Pakistan, where detainees are transferred for the review of their residency status.
The arrest comes amid reports that Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior has halted the extension process for Afghan migrants’ visas and increased pressure on migrants.
At the same time, concerns among human rights organizations and groups supporting journalists have grown regarding the situation of Afghan journalists and media activists in Pakistan.
