Qatar has requested that the United States transfer all Afghan refugees currently residing at Al-Salhia camp by September 2026. This request comes while these individuals were relocated to Qatar following the fall of the previous Afghan government in 2021.
According to reports, more than 1,100 Afghan citizens are still at Al-Salhia camp near Doha. U.S. State Department documents indicate that Doha and Washington had previously agreed that the stay of these individuals would be temporary, and that the resettlement process would be completed by 2026. Qatari officials have also emphasized that after this deadline, the full responsibility for relocating and resettling these individuals will rest with the United States.
Meanwhile, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen has urged Donald Trump to uphold Washington’s commitments to its Afghan allies. At the same time, a potential proposal to relocate some of these refugees to the Democratic Republic of Congo has met with negative reactions from human rights organizations, raising concerns about the future of these families.
