Sources close to former Afghan President Hamid Karzai say the Taliban did not permit him to travel to Tehran to attend the official funeral ceremony for Ali Khamenei, the former Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

According to these sources, Abdul Jabbar Taqwa, the former governor of Kabul and an adviser to Hamid Karzai, has traveled to Tehran to represent the former Afghan president at the official ceremony.

The official funeral procession for Ali Khamenei is scheduled to begin at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, 15 Saratan (July 6), in Tehran. According to Iranian state media, mourning and funeral ceremonies will be held in several cities, and Khamenei is expected to be laid to rest in the city of Mashhad on (9th July).

Hamid Karzai has remained in Kabul since the Taliban returned to power. However, his travel and political activities have been subject to restrictions in recent years.

The Taliban has also dispatched a delegation to Tehran to attend Khamenei’s funeral. The delegation is headed by Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban’s Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, and includes Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s acting Minister of Foreign Affairs.
