Credible sources have reported that Taliban intelligence forces have arrested four former military personnel of the previous Afghan Republic government in Faizabad city, the capital of Badakhshan province.
According to the sources, three of the individuals were arrested on Tuesday, while the fourth was detained on Wednesday in an area under the jurisdiction of the Seventh Security District of Faizabad city.
Eyewitnesses say that Taliban forces beat and mistreated the individuals during their arrest.
It remains unclear on what charges the men were detained or where they are currently being held. The Taliban have also not issued any official statement regarding the arrests.
The arrests come as Badakhshan has witnessed a series of security incidents in recent days. On Tuesday morning, Zabihullah Amiri, the Taliban’s Director of Information and Culture in Badakhshan, was killed in an attack on the Faizabad–Baharak road. The Taliban said that one attacker was killed and another was arrested in the incident.
Additionally, clashes have recently taken place in Badakhshan’s Zebak district between the Taliban and the Afghanistan Freedom Front, further escalating security tensions in the area.
