Summary

Local sources told media outlets that the Taliban have suspended the broadcasts of Radio Bamyan and sealed the office of the local media outlet.

According to the sources, the station’s office, located in the Shahr-e-Naw area of Bamyan city, was locked down by Taliban intelligence forces on Sunday, 18 May.

Radio Bamyan was the first private media outlet in the province and began operating in 2003.

So far, the Taliban have not commented on the closure of the station, and the reason behind the action by the intelligence agency remains unclear, although the Department of Information and Culture in each province is officially responsible for media affairs.

The Taliban have increased violence against journalists and interference in media activities, to the extent that recorded cases of violence in 2025 have risen by 20 percent compared to 2024.

The Afghanistan Journalists Center says that in 2025 alone, at least 207 cases of violations against journalists’ and media freedoms have been recorded. Among these, journalists were detained without a formal court order in at least 50 cases.
