It has been claimed that the wreckage of a crashed drone has been found in a mountainous area of Zebak district, Badakhshan province. Based on its structure and the design of its propellers, the drone reportedly resembles the types of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) used by the Taliban for attacks and other operational purposes.
Sources close to the Freedom Front, an armed group opposed to the Taliban, have released images that they say were taken at the site where the drone wreckage was discovered in the mountainous area. The images show portions of the drone’s airframe, engine, and propellers.
A visual assessment of the images suggests that the drone’s overall design, propeller configuration, and several other technical characteristics are similar to those of UAVs previously used by the Taliban.
Analysts say that if the identity of the wreckage is independently verified and it is confirmed that the drone belonged to the Taliban, the discovery could raise new questions about the group’s use of unmanned aerial systems and its operational capabilities.
According to previous reports, the drones used by the Taliban have largely been loitering munitions (suicide drones) featuring a fuselage approximately two meters in length and wings extending beyond the length of the fuselage. The published images appear to indicate that the wreckage recovered in Zebak shares visual similarities with the same type of drone.
As of now, the Taliban have not issued an official response regarding these claims, the published images, or the identity of the drone.
