Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) said on Sunday that electricity imports from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan had been disrupted following a technical problem in Turkmenistan’s power grid.
According to the company, the outage has affected parts of the provinces of Balkh, Jawzjan, Sar-e-Pul, Faryab, Badghis, Herat, and Samangan.
DABS said it is in contact with Turkmenistan’s state electricity company, Turkmenenergo, to resolve the issue and restore the flow of electricity. The company added that it is closely monitoring repair work on the power grid in Turkmenistan to ensure that electricity supplies to Afghanistan resume as soon as possible.
At the same time, while efforts continue to address the problem in Turkmenistan, DABS has opened discussions with Uzbek authorities to help offset part of the electricity shortfall. The company said it is seeking to temporarily supply electricity to the cities of Balkh, Sheberghan, Maymana, Sar-e-Pul, and Samangan through imported power from Uzbekistan.
According to DABS, Uzbek authorities have expressed their readiness to cooperate. However, no further details have been provided regarding the amount of electricity required, when power supplies from Uzbekistan might begin, or how long the arrangement would remain in place.
No specific timeline has yet been announced for resolving the technical problem in Turkmenistan’s power grid. It also remains unclear when electricity imports from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan will resume. DABS said efforts to resolve the issue and provide temporary electricity supplies to affected areas are ongoing.
