Today, Tuesday, 8th of Thor, marks the 34th anniversary of the Mujahideen’s victory over the government of Dr. Najibullah, a government that was considered to be supported by the former Soviet Union. This day is remembered in Afghanistan’s political calendar as one of the significant events of the past decades.

Thirty-four years ago, on 8th of Thor, 1371 in the Afghan calendar, various Mujahideen groups, after years of war and conflict, entered Kabul and the government of Dr. Najibullah, the last Soviet-backed communist regime, collapsed. This event led to a complete change in the country’s power structure.

The Taliban, in a statement on the occasion of 7th and 8th of Thor, described this day as a “historic and glorious day” and condemned the events of 7th of Thor and its aftermath. The statement further emphasized that 8th of Thor should be celebrated as a day of victory and success.

However, some citizens and political experts believe that after the Mujahideen’s victory, the country entered a period of civil wars, which resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries and caused a wave of migration. According to some, these conflicts and divisions laid the foundation for widespread instability in the following decades.

Some analysts also believe that the civil wars of the 1970s, in addition to the human casualties and widespread migration, created conditions that eventually led to the rise of the Taliban in its first period, fundamentally altering the political path of the country.
