Abdul Qahar Qadir, brother of Abdul Zahir Qadir, the former Deputy Speaker of Afghanistan’s Wolesi Jirga (House of Representatives), has defended his brother’s previous stance against the expansion of ISIS, saying that he had spoken out for the security and future of his people and became a victim because of those efforts.
In a social media post, Abdul Qahar Qadir wrote: “The price of telling the truth is always high, but standing up for the people is the work of the brave.”
According to him, when concerns were growing over the expansion of ISIS in eastern Afghanistan, Abdul Zahir Qadir did not remain silent and took a clear position in support of public security. He added that Zahir Qadir did not limit himself to statements alone, but also took practical measures to protect the people.
Abdul Qahar Qadir said that although some of Zahir Qadir’s remarks were considered strong, they were not made for personal interests or political disputes; rather, they were directed against decisions and actions that he viewed as threats to Afghanistan’s security and stability.
He emphasized that speaking the truth is not easy and that those who raise their voices for the people often face intense pressure and opposition. According to him, the courage to speak the truth and stand with the people should not become a reason for silence or fear.
Abdul Zahir Qadir was arrested several months ago in Kenya by anti-narcotics authorities and was later extradited to the United States following several judicial proceedings.
U.S. officials have said that Abdul Zahir Qadir will face trial in New York on charges related to drug trafficking and illegal arms dealing. His family had previously claimed that he was targeted because of his actions against ISIS.
