Abdul Salam Hanafi, the Taliban’s administrative deputy prime minister, visited a prison during his trip to Bamyan province and stressed that prisoners should be treated in accordance with Islamic Sharia law.
According to Hamdullah Fitrat, the Taliban’s deputy spokesperson, Hanafi was briefed on the prison’s healthcare facilities and administrative services and also heard the prisoners’ concerns and requests. He stressed that the prisoners’ problems should be addressed.
Hanafi’s remarks come amid numerous complaints of torture and mistreatment of prisoners in Taliban-run prisons. A number of female prisoners have alleged sexual harassment and other forms of abuse, while some former government security personnel have also complained of torture and the failure to investigate their cases.
Last year, around 200 imprisoned members of the former government’s security forces in Nangarhar also complained that their cases were not being reviewed and that they had not been provided with information about the status or duration of their detention.
