A group of Afghan migrants residing in Portugal held a protest gathering in Lisbon to express their support for the rights of Afghan women and to call for greater international attention to the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan.
Participants in the demonstration voiced concern over the restrictions imposed on women in Afghanistan, emphasizing that millions of Afghan women and girls have been deprived of their fundamental rights, including the right to education, the right to work, freedom of movement, and participation in social life.
In a statement issued by the organizers, it was noted that Afghan women have worked alongside men for years to promote development, education, progress, and the reconstruction of their country. The statement stressed that denying women their basic rights is not only an injustice against women but also a serious threat to Afghanistan’s future.
The protesters also called on the Government of Portugal, the European Union, the United Nations, and international human rights organizations not to remain silent in the face of the current situation of Afghan women and to take practical and effective measures to support their fundamental rights.
Highlighting the vital role of women in societal development, participants stated that no country can achieve justice, prosperity, and sustainable development without the active and free participation of women. They further underscored the right of Afghan women to education, employment, freedom, and equal opportunities.
At the conclusion of the gathering, demonstrators chanted slogans such as “Education is the right of every Afghan girl,” “Work is the right of every Afghan woman,” and “Freedom is the right of every human being.” They reaffirmed their solidarity with the women of Afghanistan and urged the international community to adopt a serious and responsible stance against the ongoing violations of the rights of Afghan women and girls.
