The Afghanistan Human Rights Watch Foundation says that the Taliban’s continued ban on girls’ education is causing damage that cannot be repaired, and that every day girls remain deprived of education, an irreversible part of their future is lost.
In a message posted on the social media platform X on Sunday (4 Asad), the foundation stated that Afghan girls are still waiting for a classroom, a book, and a future of their own.
The organization has called on the international community not to remain silent in the face of the continued deprivation of education for girls above the sixth grade and to take practical measures to protect girls’ right to education.
The Afghanistan Human Rights Watch Foundation has also urged all relevant parties to create conditions for girls to return to schools and to safeguard their fundamental right to education.
After returning to power in 1400 (2021), the Taliban suspended girls’ education beyond the sixth grade and later, in Qaws 1401 (December 2022), banned women from pursuing university education. Since then, numerous other restrictions have been imposed on women and girls in the areas of education, employment, and social participation.
So far, the Taliban government has not announced any specific timeline for lifting these restrictions. However, the United Nations, the European Union, Islamic countries, and international human rights organizations have repeatedly called for the removal of these restrictions, warning that depriving girls of education will have profound negative consequences for Afghanistan’s future, economic development, and humanitarian situation.
