In West Africa, an al-Qaeda-affiliated group has claimed responsibility for an attack on an airport and a military base in Niger’s capital, Niamey.

According to a Reuters report, the attack began early on Thursday morning (28 Jawza) and lasted for about two hours.

In a statement released by the Nigerien government via state television, it was said that 11 security personnel and two civilians were killed in the attack.

The statement added that government forces repelled the assault, killing 22 attackers and arresting nearly 20 others along with a significant quantity of weapons.

The al-Qaeda-linked group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The group is also active in Mali and Burkina Faso. Reports indicate that it carried out large-scale attacks in Mali in April this year as well, targeting Bamako airport and several military bases.
