Summary

Axios reported that U.S. President Donald Trump, during a meeting in the White House Situation Room, requested several amendments to an agreement that his representatives had negotiated with Iranian officials.

According to the report, Trump supports reaching a deal and expects the negotiations to conclude successfully in the near future. However, he wants several key provisions strengthened, particularly those related to Iran’s nuclear program.

A White House official told Axios that Trump will accept only an agreement that serves U.S. interests, incorporates his administration’s red lines, and guarantees that Iran will never obtain a nuclear weapon.

Axios also reported that the current draft memorandum of understanding includes a commitment by the Islamic Republic not to pursue nuclear weapons, but beyond that pledge, it contains no other significant concessions.

According to the report, the current text provides for a 60-day period of continued negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear commitments and the easing of U.S. sanctions. Issues such as the fate of Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium and limits on its uranium-enrichment activities will be among the first topics of discussion.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump told Fox News that Washington is close to reaching a “very good” agreement with Tehran.

The U.S. president also stated that he prefers achieving a deal with the Iranian government, while at the same time remaining prepared to return to the military option if necessary.

In part of the interview, Trump emphasized that if U.S. demands are not met, Washington will pursue other means to achieve its objectives.

He added that the United States will either secure a satisfactory agreement or address the issue through military means, and that the process will move forward, in his words, “slowly but surely.”
