Summary

The Government of Canada has announced that the “National Memorial for Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan” will be completed in the fall of 2028 after years of delay.

Canadian media reported on Wednesday, May 6, that the government has officially begun construction of the memorial in Ottawa.

According to reports, the memorial will be built in the “LeBreton Flats” area, near the Canadian War Museum.

Canada’s Minister of Veterans Affairs stated that the memorial will serve as a “lasting symbol” of appreciation for the military personnel and civilians who served in the Afghanistan mission.

According to published statistics, more than 40,000 Canadian military personnel, along with hundreds of civilian employees and government officials, were present in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2014. This mission is considered Canada’s longest military operation outside the country.

The plan to build this memorial was first proposed in 2014 and was originally scheduled for completion in 2017. However, due to disagreements over the location, the project was delayed for several years.
