The Chair of the European Parliament’s delegation for relations with Afghanistan, Raquel García Hermida Van der Walle, has reacted strongly in Brussels to the possibility of inviting representatives of the Taliban, describing the group’s policies toward women as “gender apartheid” and a “crime against humanity.”
She stated that the European Union grants no legitimacy to the Taliban and that, under the current circumstances, there is no basis for formal engagement with the group. She further emphasized that members of the Taliban should not be received in European countries but rather arrested and handed over to the International Criminal Court.
Van der Walle characterized any potential invitation of Taliban representatives to Brussels as a “highly dangerous” move, warning that it would amount to the normalization and legitimization of the Taliban. She also called for increased international pressure and sanctions against the group.
