FBI Marks Fourth Anniversary of Mahmoud Shah Habibi’s Disappearance, Vows to Bring Him Home
On the fourth anniversary of the disappearance of Mahmoud Shah Habibi, an Afghan-American citizen, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has reaffirmed its commitment to finding him and bringing him home to his family. The agency has urged anyone with information about Habibi’s whereabouts to come forward and share it with the FBI.
Mahmoud Shah Habibi disappeared on August 10, 2022, near his home in Kabul. According to the FBI, he was working at the time as an adviser to the Asia Consultancy Group, a Kabul-based telecommunications company. He had previously served as director of the Afghanistan Civil Aviation Authority.
The FBI said that on the day of his disappearance, Taliban intelligence officers detained Habibi and his driver from their vehicle. According to the agency, Habibi and his driver were among 29 other employees of the Asia Consultancy Group who were detained. No information about his fate or whereabouts has been made public since.
Michael Borgwald, the FBI’s Special Agent in Charge of the Washington Field Office’s Counterterrorism Division, said the agency remains committed to bringing Habibi home to his loved ones. He also referred to Habibi’s daughter, who has not seen her father since before her first birthday.
Borgwald urged anyone with information about Habibi’s whereabouts to contact the FBI. He emphasized that providing information could help advance the investigation and contribute to Habibi’s safe return to his family.
Meanwhile, in 2025, the FBI released a missing-person poster as part of its investigation into Habibi’s disappearance. The agency continues to appeal to the public for any information that could assist authorities in the case.
The U.S. State Department’s Rewards for Justice program has also offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to the location, recovery, and safe return of Mahmoud Shah Habibi.
Four years after his disappearance, Habibi’s fate and whereabouts remain unknown.
