Following months of lengthy negotiations, Hamas has agreed to a framework for laying down its arms in Gaza a move viewed as a significant breakthrough for U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace plan aimed at ending the war in Gaza.
According to reports, under the agreement, Hamas's remaining heavy weapons will be cataloged and stockpiled, with the disarmament process being implemented in multiple phases under the supervision of Palestinian representatives and an international body.
Donald Trump stated that this agreement is a vital step toward implementing his 20-point peace plan, paving the way for the administration of Gaza to be transferred to a new Palestinian government. He added that parallel to the laydown of arms, Israeli forces will withdraw from Gaza, and necessary security guarantees for the region will be provided.
On the other hand, a senior Hamas official confirmed the agreement in an interview with the BBC, though an official statement from the group has not yet been released. A member of Hamas's negotiating team noted that the implementation of the agreement is contingent upon Israel's actions, particularly the withdrawal of its troops from Gaza.
The deal was reportedly brokered by the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey. Egypt is scheduled to host a meeting of the mediators to oversee the execution of the second phase of the ceasefire.
Nevertheless, Israel's official stance remains unclear, as Tel Aviv had previously insisted it would not withdraw its forces from Gaza.
