Although Lebanon is mentioned at least three times in the text of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and the Islamic Republic, with repeated emphasis on preserving the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, Israel is not mentioned in any provision of the document.
Under the terms of the agreement, the United States and the Islamic Republic have undertaken specific commitments regarding the future of Lebanon. Article One of the memorandum states that both parties commit to the immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on the Lebanese front and to supporting Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
On Wednesday, June 17, the United States released the official text of the memorandum of understanding that it had concluded with the Islamic Republic at the end of last week. The document was made public following widespread requests and criticism over the lack of public access to the agreement’s text.
Published under the title “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding Between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the document has been distributed to media outlets to clarify its provisions for the public.
According to relevant officials, the memorandum is scheduled to be formally signed on Friday. Its formal signing will initiate a 60-day period during which the two sides will continue negotiations and finalize the terms of the agreement.
The release of the document comes amid heightened attention from media organizations and political observers, particularly regarding its provisions related to Lebanon and future security arrangements.
