Iran’s Deputy Ambassador in Kabul, Seyed Hassan Mortazavi, has said that Iran does not support any political or military opposition groups against the Taliban and does not consider armed resistance against the group to be “resistance.” He emphasized that Afghanistan’s crisis should be resolved through dialogue and mutual understanding.
Speaking at an event, Mortazavi said that an “Islamic government” is currently in power in Afghanistan and that all sides should come to the negotiating table to address the country’s challenges. According to him, neither Iran nor any Iranian officials have provided support or instructions for military action to groups opposed to the Taliban.
Referring to attacks carried out by anti-Taliban fronts, Mortazavi said such armed conflicts should not be considered resistance. He added that resistance refers to a struggle against foreign occupation, not actions that result in casualties among Afghans.
The remarks come amid reports that Iranian authorities have increased pressure on members of anti-Taliban resistance groups residing in Iran and have restricted them from carrying out armed activities against the Taliban.
Mortazavi also said that Iran has consistently advised political groups opposed to the Taliban to seek solutions to Afghanistan’s problems through dialogue and reconciliation.
It is worth noting that since the Taliban returned to power, Iran has hosted several rounds of talks between the Taliban and Afghan political figures opposed to the group.
