Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi attended the funeral ceremony of Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Ishaq Fayyadh, one of the most prominent Shiite religious authorities in the world, in the city of Kadhimiya on Friday. The ceremony was attended by a large number of clerics, religious figures, and members of the public.
According to a statement issued by the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Office, Al-Zaidi participated in the funeral to pay tribute to Ayatollah Fayyadh’s distinguished scholarly, religious, and social legacy.
The funeral procession was held under heightened security measures and in coordination with the relevant authorities in Kadhimiya. Images released from the event showed the presence of numerous seminary scholars, local officials, and people from various segments of society.
The office of Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Ishaq Fayyadh announced on Thursday that funeral ceremonies for the late religious authority would be held in Kadhimiya on Friday and in the holy city of Najaf on Saturday.
Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Ishaq Fayyadh was widely regarded as one of the leading Shiite maraji’ (sources of emulation) based in Najaf, Iraq. Originally from Jaghori district in Afghanistan’s Ghazni province, he passed away at the age of 96.
Following his death, the Iraqi government declared three days of national mourning. A number of political and religious leaders across the region have also issued messages of condolence.
Among those who expressed their condolences were Iraq’s president and prime minister, Masoud Pezeshkian, Ashraf Ghani, and Hamid Karzai.
