The office of Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Ishaq Fayyadh announced on Thursday that funeral ceremonies for the late religious authority would be held in Kadhimiya on Friday and in the holy city of Najaf on Saturday.

Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Ishaq Fayyadh was widely regarded as one of the leading Shiite maraji’ (sources of emulation) based in Najaf, Iraq. Originally from Jaghori district in Afghanistan’s Ghazni province, he passed away at the age of 96.

Following his death, the Iraqi government declared three days of national mourning. A number of political and religious leaders across the region have also issued messages of condolence.

Among those who expressed their condolences were Iraq’s president and prime minister, Masoud Pezeshkian, Ashraf Ghani, and Hamid Karzai.
