Summary

The former Afghan government’s chief peace negotiator, Mohammad Masoom Stanekzai, has said in response to the killing of Hasib Panjshiri that a policy of repression and mistreatment toward opponents cannot resolve Afghanistan’s problems; rather, it further complicates and deepens the crisis.

Referring to the experience of Afghanistan’s past five decades of wars and political upheavals, Stanekzai said that “killing and arresting” people does not solve any problems and that such an approach only broadens political and social tensions.

He also criticized the Taliban’s treatment of the bodies of Hasib Panjshiri and other victims of the conflict, saying that disrespecting human remains is contrary to Islamic principles and human dignity.

Stanekzai stressed that ethical and humanitarian principles must be respected in conflicts and that, instead of resorting to violence, efforts should be made to pursue political and peaceful solutions to the country’s problems.
