According to recent revelations by The Telegraph, more than 312,000 migrants, workers, and their family members applied for United Kingdom citizenship over the past year in an unprecedented surge, marking the highest level in the country’s history.
In its special report, The Telegraph wrote that by March this year, citizenship applications from migrants and asylum seekers in Britain had reached an all-time high, with the figure nearly doubling compared to eight years ago.
The newspaper added that this unprecedented rise in citizenship applications is linked to the current British government’s plans to tighten permanent residency and visa regulations.
According to the report, many migrants are trying to secure British citizenship before the new restrictions take effect, as the conditions for obtaining permanent residency are expected to become more difficult.
The Telegraph stated that political changes and fears of stricter laws have pushed migrants to apply for citizenship and passports as quickly as possible in order to gain legal security and ensure their long-term stay.
This comes at a time when migrant deportations and tougher visa policies have become major political issues in Britain, causing concern among many foreign migrants, including Afghans, about their future.
