Chinese state media have reported that five people were killed and another was injured following the collapse of a mine in Yunnan Province in southwestern China.
According to the Xinhua News Agency, the incident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday in Baiyu Village, located in Nagu Town of Huize County.
The report stated that the mine was being operated illegally, and six workers were present at the site when the collapse occurred. As a result, all six workers became trapped under the debris.
Rescue teams launched a search-and-rescue operation and successfully pulled all six workers from the rubble before transporting them to a hospital for medical treatment. However, five of the workers later died from the severity of their injuries.
Xinhua added that the sole survivor remains under medical care and is reported to be in stable condition. Health authorities have stated that the individual is no longer in danger of death.
Local Chinese authorities said that the exact cause of the mine collapse has not yet been determined, and an investigation is underway to establish how the incident occurred.
The tragedy has once again drawn attention to mine safety issues and illegal mining activities in certain parts of China, matters that have led to similar accidents and loss of life in previous years.
