Mohammad Mohaqiq, leader of the Islamic Unity Party of the People of Afghanistan, described the detention of women and girls in Herat as “a blatant violation of the dignity and honor of the country’s women” and warned of the consequences of such actions.
In a statement, Mohaqiq referred to reports regarding the arrest of a number of women and girls in the city of Herat, describing the move as inconsistent with Islamic, humanitarian, and ethical principles. He called for a reconsideration of such approaches.
He also addressed recent events in Herat, stating that peaceful protests by some residents of the city in response to the arrests had been met with a violent crackdown.
Citing available reports, the leader of the Islamic Unity Party of the People of Afghanistan claimed that several protesters were injured during the demonstrations and that a number of people lost their lives.
Mohaqiq stressed that violating the dignity, rights, and honor of the people cannot serve as a solution to existing challenges. He warned that such measures would only deepen the crisis, fuel public discontent, and widen social divisions.
He urged the Taliban to refrain from violence and coercive measures and instead adopt reasonable and lawful approaches grounded in respect for the rights and human dignity of citizens, thereby fostering peace, stability, and national unity.
Taliban officials have not yet issued an official response to these remarks.
