Summary

The death toll from an unprecedented heatwave across Europe has exceeded 270 as of Thursday, the fourth of Saratan (June 25). At the same time, new temperature records have been set in several European countries, and health authorities have warned of a further rise in fatalities.

Spain has reported the highest number of deaths, with 212 heat-related fatalities recorded between June 21 and June 24. The majority of the victims were elderly individuals and people with underlying health conditions.

In France, at least 55 people have died while attempting to escape the extreme heat, primarily due to drowning. Several additional deaths from heatstroke, including the deaths of children, have also been reported. Meanwhile, hospitals across the country are facing an unprecedented surge in heat-related admissions, with some medical centers placed under emergency conditions.

In Germany, the heatwave has been accompanied by record-high temperatures, disruptions to rail transport, and an increase in accidents. Reports indicate that several people have also died due to extreme heat and drowning incidents.

In recent days, temperatures across large parts of Europe have reached 40°C and above. This has led to school closures, disruptions in transportation networks, increased pressure on power grids and healthcare systems, and the cancellation of several public events.

Experts from the World Meteorological Organization and climate researchers have emphasized that human-induced climate change has significantly increased the likelihood of such extreme heatwaves. European authorities have also warned that, with the continued extreme heat in the coming days, the number of fatalities may still rise further.
