Reports indicate that, during its monthly meeting for the month of Asad (July–August), the Taliban’s Ministry of Higher Education verbally instructed universities across Afghanistan to suspend the processing and verification of educational documents belonging to women and girls.
According to a source, the directive was communicated to universities verbally, without the issuance of any formal decree or written order. The source did not provide further details about the scope or implementation of the directive.
A university lecturer also said that the Taliban are seeking to purge women and girls from academic institutions. According to the lecturer, imposing such restrictions could further limit women’s and girls’ access to educational and academic services.
The report comes as the Taliban’s restrictions on the education and higher education of women and girls in Afghanistan remain in place. However, no official details have so far been released regarding the alleged directive or the extent to which it has been implemented at universities across the country.
