Some residents of Parjuman District in Farah Province staged a protest against the relocation of a road construction project from the district center to another area, calling for the dismissal of the Taliban district governor.
Local sources reported on Thursday, 25 June, that the project had originally been allocated by a relief organization for Parjuman district. However, the Taliban district governor allegedly shifted its implementation to the Nezgan area—his hometown and place of residence.
According to the protesters, executing the project in the new location would deprive residents of the district center of its benefits as well as related employment opportunities. They described the decision as unfair and demanded that it be reconsidered.
The protesters also claimed that officials from the implementing organization were compelled, under pressure from local Taliban authorities, to accept and carry out the decision. They warned that if the relocation of the project continues, they will shut down the organization’s office.
Based on information from local sources, following the end of the protest, Taliban forces arrested one of the community elders who had spoken during the demonstration.
Taliban officials have so far not issued any official response regarding the allegations, including the relocation of the project and the arrest of the individual.
Parjuman district is a mountainous and remote area of Farah Province, and due to its lack of transport infrastructure, the implementation of road construction projects is of significant importance to its residents.
