Reuters, citing sources familiar with the matter, has reported that Iran has purchased man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) from China.
In a report published today (Wednesday, July 29), Reuters said Iran is expected to receive up to 400 Chinese-made MANPADS within the coming weeks.
Three informed sources told the news agency that the deal is valued at approximately $60 million to $70 million.
Under the agreement, Iran will receive between 300 and 400 portable surface-to-air missile systems to strengthen its short-range air defense capabilities.
A European security source told Reuters that officials in his country were aware of several potential sales agreements involving QW-series man-portable air defense systems to Iran.
According to the report, the contract was signed with Zhongqing Baoshang International Investment, a Hong Kong-based company that, according to the sources, is acting as an intermediary between the Iranian side and the Chinese supplier.
Sources familiar with the matter said the shipment is expected to be transported from Urumqi in western China to Pakistan and then onward to Iran.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment. However, China’s Foreign Ministry dismissed the report, describing the allegations as “completely groundless.”
Pakistan’s military media wing also denied any involvement, saying speculation that Islamabad had played a role in facilitating the transfer of Chinese air defense weapons to Iran was “entirely fabricated and false.”
