The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, Richard Bennett, has expressed concern over the Taliban’s use of force and violence against peaceful protesters in Herat province.
In a recent statement, Bennett said that efforts should be increased to de-escalate the current situation and that the right of people especially women and girls to freedom of expression and opinion must be respected. He emphasized that the continuation of violence could further escalate tensions and increase harm.
He also stated that those involved in incidents of excessive force and violence against protesters must be held accountable and made responsible for their actions.
In recent years, due to restrictions on the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan, sporadic civic protests and demonstrations have taken place in various provinces. International organizations have consistently called for such issues to be addressed through dialogue and peaceful means rather than the suppression of protests.
