Abdul Rab Rasul Sayyaf, one of Afghanistan’s former jihadist leaders, has accused the Taliban of deviating from the “path of the Quran” and criticized their use of violence against civilians.
In a message addressed to the Taliban, Sayyaf wrote: “Fear God. You have strayed from the path of the Quran. The Quran instructs guidance through wisdom and gentle, pleasant speech, not through the force of weapons.”
These remarks appear to be in response to the recent detention of several women in Herat, as well as the Taliban’s reported crackdown on public protests in the province.
The former jihadi leader further emphasized in his post on the social media platform X that the Quran prioritizes encouragement and appreciation over threats and humiliation.
He also warned the Taliban, saying: “Fear God once again and refrain from beating and killing people; otherwise, the cost of your actions will be severe in this world and the hereafter.”
In recent days, reports have emerged of the detention of several women in various cities across Afghanistan, particularly in Herat. These actions have sparked reactions and protests from local residents.
According to reports, the Taliban reportedly suppressed these demonstrations in the Jabra’il area of Herat with violence, resulting in one death and several injuries.
Several Afghan politicians and human rights organizations have also condemned the detention of women and the use of force against protesters.
