Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met in Rome to discuss recent tensions between the two countries following the Iran war. The meeting took place amid political pressures that have affected relations between the Italian government and Donald Trump’s administration in recent weeks.
Reuters reported on Friday, May 8, that the two sides discussed the situation in the Persian Gulf, the Ukraine war, U.S. tariffs on European goods, and bilateral cooperation between Rome and Washington.
According to the report, U.S. officials expressed dissatisfaction with Italy’s stance on the Iran war and its refusal to support U.S. and Israeli military operations. These disagreements have become a key source of tension between the two Western allies in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, Italian officials emphasized that the country’s decision not to allow the use of the Sigonella base on the island of Sicily for operations related to the Iran war was made without receiving a formal request from the United States.
The meeting took place amid growing political tensions between Washington and Rome, particularly regarding the Iran war, which has drawn the attention of political circles in both Europe and the United States.
