Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has announced that she will return to her country in December this year and surrender herself to the authorities to face trial.
In an audio message, she also called for the ban imposed on her party, the Awami League, to be lifted. The 78-year-old former premier said that she would announce the exact date of her return at an appropriate time and that she is not afraid of the cases against her, which she described as “fabricated.”
Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh nearly two years ago following widespread public protests and an escalating political crisis. Her announcement that she will return and present herself for trial is being regarded as a significant development in the country’s political landscape.
