Local sources report that Abdul Jabbar, a former military officer, has been killed in an attack by unidentified armed individuals in Takhar province. According to these sources, he was a resident of Yawan district in Badakhshan province and was bedridden due to illness when the incident occurred.
On Monday, July 27, sources announced that the incident took place about a week ago at Abdul Jabbar's residence in Chah Ab district of Takhar province. Based on this information, unidentified gunmen entered the premises and murdered him.
Previously, local sources had also reported the killing of several former military personnel in various provinces of Afghanistan by unidentified armed men. Official details and motives behind these incidents remain unclear.
These reports come as a number of former military members have fled Afghanistan to neighboring countries including Iran and Pakistan due to security concerns and fears of reprisals following the Taliban's return to power.
Meanwhile, some former service members who remained in Afghanistan or returned after a period abroad continue to voice concern over the ongoing security situation and persistent threats.
According to the findings of a joint investigation by the Hasht-e Subh newspaper and several other media outlets, at least 110 former military personnel were killed in Afghanistan between 2023 and mid-2025. The report noted that 18 of these cases occurred in the first seven months of last year alone.
The Telegraph had also previously reported that more than 200 former Afghan military members were killed following the leak of British Ministry of Defence data, which exposed their identities.
Additionally, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) highlighted in one of its reports instances of extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, torture, and ill-treatment targeting former members of the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces.
