Local sources in Herat say that the wave of arrests of women in the province continued on Sunday, with Taliban forces detaining eight women in the Jebrail area of the city. According to the sources, the arrests were carried out as part of measures that the Taliban have linked to enforcing their interpretation of the hijab regulations.
Eyewitnesses told media outlets that a number of Taliban personnel, including several female officers, were deployed in a busy section of the Jebrail market and detained eight young women. According to the witnesses, the women were taken to an undisclosed location following their arrest.
Witnesses also stated that, in their view, the detained women were wearing full Islamic dress. However, Taliban authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the details of the incident or the specific reasons for the arrests.
According to Herat residents, the operation targeting women began on Saturday. On the first day, dozens of young women were reportedly detained from various parts of the city, including markets, shopping centers, and busy streets.
The reports come amid ongoing concerns and debate over restrictions on women’s dress and presence in public spaces in Afghanistan, issues that continue to draw criticism from human rights organizations and civil society activists.
