In one of the most unusual recent customs cases in Switzerland, a Swiss woman was stopped and searched while entering the country from Germany in a vehicle carrying 55 suitcases and bags.
According to a report by the German newspaper Bild, the incident occurred on Thursday, May 28, at the Thayngen border crossing in the canton of Schaffhausen.
The report states that the woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was returning home to Switzerland after a leisure trip to Germany when the unusually large amount of luggage she was carrying attracted the attention of customs officers.
Swiss customs authorities said that after noticing the large number of suitcases inside a van, officers stopped the vehicle for further inspection and began a detailed search.
During the inspection, which lasted about 20 minutes, X-ray scanning equipment was used to thoroughly examine the contents of all the suitcases and bags.
Officers removed a total of 55 suitcases and bags from the vehicle. Since all of the luggage belonged to a single individual, it drew particular attention from inspectors.
After completing their examination, customs officials announced that no smuggled, prohibited, or declarable goods were found among the belongings. According to the authorities, all items were classified as personal effects.
In the end, after the inspection process was completed and the contents were confirmed to be legal, the woman was allowed to enter Switzerland without paying any fine and without any legal case being opened against her.
Because of the unusually high number of suitcases carried by a single traveler, the incident received widespread attention in Swiss local media and became one of the most talked-about news stories in recent days.
