Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa arrived in Ankara, the capital of Türkiye, on Wednesday to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump and hold consultations on the sidelines of the NATO Leaders’ Summit.
Türkiye’s ambassador to Syria and the country’s Minister of Trade welcomed President al-Sharaa at the airport. The visit is aimed at holding bilateral meetings and discussions on political and economic cooperation between Syria and Türkiye.
According to Anadolu Agency, citing President Donald Trump, Trump said during his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara: “President Ahmed al-Sharaa has brought stability to his country over the past 18 months and has succeeded in uniting the entire nation.”
These remarks come as Damascus has witnessed increased diplomatic engagement from Western countries in recent months.
One of the most significant recent developments was French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Syria, marking the first visit by a European Union head of state since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024.
Earlier, President Macron had welcomed President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the Élysée Palace in Paris. That meeting marked the Syrian president’s first official visit to a Western country since assuming office.
Syria’s recent diplomatic outreach indicates that Damascus is seeking to expand its foreign relations and strengthen engagement with regional and international partners.
