The Taliban’s Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs has announced that a proposal to assemble and gradually manufacture tractors and agricultural machinery in Afghanistan has been approved. According to the office, the initiative was submitted by the private sector and endorsed following a review process.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 29, the office said the project aims to establish the domestic assembly and phased production of tractors and a number of agricultural machines required by Afghanistan’s farming sector. However, it did not disclose a timeline for implementation or provide details regarding the scale of investment.
At present, the vast majority of advanced agricultural machinery, including tractors, is imported into Afghanistan. Most tractors available on the Afghan market are manufactured in Iran, Russia, India, China, and Pakistan, supplying the country’s agricultural needs.
In recent years, domestic production of certain types of agricultural equipment has also begun. Among them are threshing machines, which are being manufactured by several private companies, with production gradually expanding.
In 2020, Afghanistan exported, for the first time, a shipment of 12 threshing machines manufactured by a private company in Nangarhar Province to Tajikistan. Since then, the production and export of this type of agricultural machinery has expanded to several Central Asian countries.
