Local sources say that Wahidullah Wisal, the Taliban official responsible for uncovering a Taliban prison in Nangarhar, was killed in a shooting by unidentified gunmen in Jalalabad on Monday evening, October 5.
Sources within the Taliban’s Nangarhar Police Command have also confirmed Wisal’s death, saying that efforts to identify and arrest those responsible for the incident have begun.
According to these sources, the motive and objective behind the attack remain unclear. Taliban security agencies have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Eyewitnesses said that the attackers fled the scene following the shooting and that the body of the Taliban official was taken to a hospital.
As of the publication of this report, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
In recent months, several incidents of insecurity and targeted attacks have been reported in Nangarhar and a number of other eastern provinces of Afghanistan. Taliban security officials have repeatedly maintained that security is ensured in the cities; however, in several cases, members and officials of the group have been targeted by unidentified gunmen or opposition groups.
