Mohammad Hassan Akhund, the Taliban’s Prime Minister, visited the construction site of the second carriageway of the Kabul–Jalalabad Highway in Kabul’s Surobi district on Thursday. This marks the first time he has publicly inspected a road construction project.
According to a statement released by the Taliban’s Arg (Presidential Palace) on Thursday, July 2 (11 Saratan), Akhund said during the visit that the completion of the project would facilitate transportation and strengthen the economy of the surrounding areas.
The Taliban’s prime minister rarely appears at official meetings with senior members of the group and has so far made few notable provincial trips or foreign visits.
Taliban officials announced the launch of the second carriageway project for the Kabul–Jalalabad Highway in November 2024 (Aqrab 1403), stating that the construction would be financed through transit toll revenues.
According to the Taliban, construction of the 32-kilometre second carriageway, beginning from the Kabul side, is underway and has reached approximately 20 percent completion.
The group added that work is also continuing on the first section of the project, a 22-kilometre stretch extending from the Nangarhar side.
