Summary

The World Food Programme has warned that Afghanistan is facing one of the most severe malnutrition crises, with nearly five million mothers and children in the country in urgent need of assistance.

In a report published on May 16, this organization stated that economic pressures, the large-scale return of refugees, a reduction in humanitarian aid, and increasing regional tensions have worsened the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.

The World Food Programme added that the ongoing war in the Middle East and rising fuel prices have also made the delivery and distribution of humanitarian aid more difficult.

Additionally, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that this year approximately 21.9 million people, equivalent to 45 percent of Afghanistan’s population, require humanitarian assistance.

Experts say that extensive restrictions within administrative structures under the Taliban have reduced the capacity to effectively address the humanitarian crisis and malnutrition, creating serious challenges for aid delivery.
