Local sources in Faryab Province report that, several days after the drowning of a 19-year-old young man in the Sarhuj water reservoir (band-e abgardan) in the Pushtun Kot district, search operations to recover his body are still ongoing.

According to these sources, the young man was named “Meharban” and was a resident of the Khwaja Paitakht village in the city of Maymana. He drowned on the 10th of Jawza while at the reservoir, and no trace of his body has yet been found.

Local sources further state that in recent days, a number of swimmers and community members have attempted to locate the body; however, due to the considerable depth of the water and the challenging conditions of the site, these efforts have so far been unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that a rescue and search team from the central Fire and Rescue Department under the Taliban administration, equipped with specialized search and recovery equipment, has been dispatched from Kabul to Faryab in order to expedite the operation.

The family of Meharban has also appealed to professional swimmers, rescue personnel, and individuals with experience in water rescue operations to assist in locating and retrieving their son’s body.

This accident comes amid a recent increase in drowning cases across various parts of Afghanistan. Earlier, several individuals including two brothers in Daykundi province and six other citizens in Kapisa and Ghazni provinces also lost their lives due to drowning.

Local residents are calling on relevant authorities to pay greater attention to providing rescue equipment, installing warning signs in high-risk areas, and raising public awareness in order to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
