Summary

In a newly issued directive, the Taliban Ministry of Education’s Directorate of Islamic Education has instructed schools and madrasas across Kabul that students will no longer be permitted to bring smartphones into educational institutions.

According to information obtained, the directive states that the use of smartphones by students has a detrimental impact on their academic performance and concentration. Consequently, the possession and use of such devices within educational settings have been prohibited.

The decision comes amid the recent circulation of videos and images on social media showing students asleep during lessons or engaging in various activities inside classrooms in the absence of teachers. The footage has sparked widespread reactions and renewed concerns regarding the state of the educational environment.

Meanwhile, a number of analysts view such incidents as indicative of the broader weaknesses within Afghanistan’s education system. They argue that the quality of education has faced serious challenges since the Taliban’s return to power.

Furthermore, some parents and education advocates contend that, rather than banning mobile phones, authorities should focus on implementing practical measures to improve educational standards, recruit qualified teachers, and enhance learning facilities and resources.

The move also comes as restrictions on girls’ education remain firmly in place, leaving millions of girls deprived of access to secondary and higher education. Critics argue that, alongside these restrictions, the quality of education in boys’ schools has also deteriorated, while greater emphasis has been placed on the construction and expansion of religious seminaries.
