Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has announced that the U.S. will deploy 5,000 additional troops to Poland.
In a post on Truth Social on Thursday, Trump said that his relationship with Karol Nawrocki, Poland’s conservative nationalist president, was one of the reasons behind his decision to send more troops.
The announcement came two days after JD Vance told reporters that the deployment of American troops to Poland had been delayed.
This comes as, following Trump’s repeated calls for NATO to take a greater role in Europe’s defense, it had long been expected that the United States would reduce its military presence in Europe.
Trump hosted Nawrocki at the White House in May last year and supported him at a critical moment before Poland’s election, in which Nawrocki defeated Donald Tusk, the centrist and pro-European candidate.
He met Nawrocki again at the White House in September, when he said that the United States could increase its troop presence in Poland and pledged to guarantee the country’s defense security.
