International media outlets have reported that 49 Nigerian nationals lost their lives from hunger and dehydration in the Sahara Desert while traveling from Mali to Nigeria.
According to the reports, the victims were attempting to return to their families before the arrival of Eid al-Adha. However, the vehicle carrying them broke down in the Sahara Desert, leaving the passengers stranded without access to sufficient food and water.
Reports indicate that a total of 51 people were traveling in the vehicle. Only two survivors were found after enduring a long and arduous journey on foot to reach a water source, which ultimately saved their lives.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. However, detailed information regarding the identities of the victims and the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy has not yet been released.
