U.S. President Donald Trump said that, in his view, the ceasefire between the United States and Iran has come to an end and that he no longer wishes to engage with Tehran. Responding to reporters’ questions in Ankara, Trump stated: “That is a very interesting question. As far as I’m concerned, the ceasefire is over. I no longer want to have anything to do with them.”
The U.S. president also said that he would speak with American negotiators. However, he emphasized that Iran wants the negotiations to continue, while adding that, in his opinion, further engagement with Tehran would only be a waste of time.
The United States and Iran signed an understanding agreement on 17 June, under which military hostilities between the two countries were suspended. Under the terms of the agreement, both sides committed to holding negotiations over a 60-day period with the aim of reaching a final and lasting peace agreement.
