U.S. President Donald Trump announced moments ago on his social media platform that the Islamic Republic of Iran has requested that talks with the United States continue. He stated that Washington has agreed to the request, but has made it clear to Iranian officials, without any ambiguity, that the ceasefire has ended.
In part of his message, Trump wrote: “The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue discussions. We have agreed to this request, but the United States has made it clear and unequivocally informed them that the ceasefire is over.”
The remarks come as the United States has launched strikes against dozens of targets across five southern provinces of Iran following attacks on vessels in transit, which Washington has attributed to Iran. U.S. officials have described the strikes as a response to security threats against maritime shipping.
In response, Iranian officials have condemned the attacks and stated that they reserve the right to retaliate and defend themselves against strikes on the country’s infrastructure. Tehran has so far provided no further details regarding the timing or possible nature of any response.
